Washington County has a lot of volunteer opportunities, especially for high school students. Community service is often required for high school students to graduate. Additionally, community service is a top priority on college applications.

Volunteering has a positive effect on the community and those around you. You can also earn scholarship opportunities by participating in community service.

At Century High School, there is a program called Civics and Community Services. In this class, students learn the importance of helping out in their community.

One student who is involved in this program is a senior named Tova Broadbent. Broadbent is also involved in the Youth Advisory Council, otherwise known as YAC.

Community service “provides a sense of community and helping people in need. It reminds us that we can rely on others and their are people willing to help those in need,” stated Broadbent.

Broadbent also said, “Outdoor school at Camp Magruder was my favorite because I got to be hands on with students and teach about nature as well as learn some of it myself. I recommend doing outdoor school because it provides a lot of hours but it is also fun and you meet amazing students and get to be able to teach them about the outdoors.”

Another student involved in Civics and Community Services is Jocelyn Done. Done thought that volunteering was important as it allows you “ to be involved in your community and know that their are people who need help.”

Done also said that she “ recommended helping the environment and less on people because the environment is in need of help and if our future generations help to better it it will improve all quality of life.”

Community service is a way to better your community and to provide for those in need. There are a lot of options for anyone who wants to help out in their own community. Some good places are the Oregon food Bank, Avamar, the Hillsboro public Library, the Oregon Humane Society, Urban Gleaners, and Portland Parks and Recreation- Natural Resources. Helping in your community is important and will improve your life as well as other.
