Michaela Canete is our Rose Queen!

Update: Michaela Canete has won the title of Rose Court Queen! This achievement grants her a coronation ceremony, appearances throughout the country (even outside of the United States) and the honour and respect o f many individuals of the community, even the entire city and greater-metro area of Portland. She received a $3,500 scholarship, a financial mentor, a huge wardrobe complete with cosmetics, and networking opportunities. The Rose Festival Court has been recognizing amazing young women in the Portland-Metro community since 1967.This year, celebrating their 50th anniversary, Century’s own Michaela Canete has been honored as a Rose Court Princess. This year the Rose Festival Queen was chosen by a panel of judges, from 15 outstanding teens (the Princesses) including our very own Canete. To become a Rose Festival Princess, one must go through a rigorous application process. You must have at least a 3.0 GPA (or a 2.75 GPA with special conditions), have 20 verifiably recorded hours of community service hours in high school, and submit an application. The application must be typed, and must contain a biography, a recommendation form, proof of community service, and an official high school transcript. The final pretenses of your application is being a female student graduating this year or on track to graduate next year. After submitting an application, you must attend an orientation session, and will later be chosen from a pool of applicants on the following traits. “Character (50%): Demonstrates good citizenship, community-minded, involved in school and other activities, shows desires to help others. Communication Skills (25%): Good verbal skills, speaks clearly, expresses herself appropriately, creative speech content, correct grammar, good eye contact. Presence (25%): Poised under pressure, prepared for speech and interview, enthusiastic, sincere, comfortable with herself, appropriate grooming.” (all according to rosefestival.org) One can easily see the intense competition and commitment Canete must posses after fighting through the application and the sky-high expectations the Rose Festival required of its Princesses.
