On Friday, April 14th, Century High School is going to host the second annual “Stars of the Century,” a pageant that is being made a Century tradition. There will be comedic acts, dance performances, lip-sync battles, anything the participants decide to do in order to win a $500 scholarship to a college of their choosing.

The original name of the pageant was Man of the Century. This new title change allows the pageant to be more inclusive to all genders. This year, Stars of the Century currently has fourteen students that paid the $75 fee to perform.

Fundraising is an essential part of participating and winning the pageant. There will be a panel of judges scoring the application (which students fill out prior to the pageant), their talent, and how many points they receive from fundraising. Having the most amount of money fundraised increases a competitor's chances of winning.

“It’s all about community service and displaying their skills to the audience,” Nataly Sanchez concluded, who is also competing in the Stars of the Century. Her, along with junior Monica Salazar, are putting on a lip syncing performance. Salazar raised over $150 for the Doernbecher’s Hospital.

All of the profit will go to the OHSU Doernbecher’s Children’s Hospital and the Tuality Breast Health and Cancer Center.

This year’s Stars of the Century are Zac Cole and Josie Buchta’s senior project. “I get to help make a difference in multiple people’s lives,” Zac Cole explained. “Not only do I get to help the patients of the hospitals get the help they need, I also get to help a fellow peer win a $500 scholarship.”

Lorenzo Alazas will be reading an explanation of Cuil Theory for comedic purposes. While the prize isn’t a significant amount of money looking at the average college tuitions, “Every little bit counts towards college,” Alazas stated.

One of the requirements to entering the pageant is being actively involved at Century, either in a sport or activity, along with a clean record. It’s an opportunity for these students to showcase their skills as well as be a positive role model for other students at Century.

If you want to witness this year’s Stars of the Century, the show will take place on Friday the 14th of April in the auditorium. Hope to see you there!
