Mr. Gainey

Many teachers at this school tirelessly work to create a positive, educational environment for all students, but often lack recognition for their efforts. Its our job to inform the student body of these domestic heroes through teacher spotlights.

Today, we bring you the story of Mr. David Gainey, a math teacher who has been teaching at Century for many years, impacting the lives of countless students in the process.

Gainey currently teaches Geometry and Accelerated Algebra II. He has a stricter test policy. He is truly looking out for students, prioritizing their education over grades. Despite the difficulty of his courses, students appreciate his commitment to their education. Sophomore Tyanna Hoang, an Accelerated Algebra II student, echoes this sentiment. “I’m always able to get help when needed.”

Mr Gainey is also a girls varsity basketball coach. Players such as sophomore Sarah Gruber enjoy his commitment to their entire well being in school. “He and the other coaches offer help in the areas they teach in school. If we need help in math we can come to him.” Students of his are impressed across the board with his commitment to learning and knowledge. He brings his A-Game on the court, in the classroom, and in life.

Sophomore in Accelerated Algebra II, Johnny Ngo, is thankful to have an approachable teacher- someone he isn’t afraid to ask for help from. “I most enjoy that he gives off a helpful, friendly vibe… He’s helped to improve my educational experience by helping me every time I have a point of confusion.”

According to Geometry student Kendra Thompson, Mr.Gainey understands his students and their struggle on test day to remember all of the complex formulas. “... I have to say that using our notes on quizzes and tests is what I enjoy most.” An issue many students face is the common test policy, particularly in math, not allowing students to use notes and requiring students to have a near perfect memory, paired with a strict no-retake policy. Mr. Gainey allows students to use notes, while maintaining a strict retake policy to increase student accountability and responsibility.

So, on behalf of Century High School, we thank you for your outstanding devotion to your students, the school, and the Girls Basketball Team.
