The school mascot. The unsung hero. The entire reason the quieter parts of the student body show any school spirit. The year-round athlete. McJagger.
McJagger is the uniting force behind the student body. Featured almost weekly on @century_updates, he is an upand coming CHS celebrity. As a symbol that reflects the Century sense of school spirit and the athletic department, the mascot has a lot of responsibility to bring it to the next level. But he doesn’t let the pressure of being a major representative get to him.
“It is a lot of fun making the whole student section cheer and getting them pumped. Hearing the student cheer makes it totally worth it,” the mascot, who preferred to remain anonymous, commented.
Despite the glamour of being known school-wide, there are some downsides. Some stinky downsides. “I would wash the mascot suit more often, it can get very stinky very fast and putting it on isn't very fun because of the smell.“ said ASB President Lauren Weber, additionally reporting that the suit has been washed under six times.
“Not only that, but it takes two people to put it on- it would be nice to be able to put it on by myself,” the mascot said. The suit has ice packs taped in the torso to keep the wearer from sweating buckets, worsening the stink of the suit.
“It can be nice because they get the crowd pumped when they themselves are pumped,” said freshman Kirsten Stevens.
“I also love the pictures that people take and when little kids come up and want a hug or a picture,“ said the esteemed character himself.
“Being the mascot has taught me what school spirit really is; it's about loving your school and having fun at events and dressing up.” Being a mascot is represents standing for something bigger and it represents giving life to the audience.
In fact, many people attend many sports events just to see the mascot. Mascots are a universal symbol of pride and leadership. As a strong, local community center, Century High School needs to be represented, and that is where McJagger comes in.
As a fun, energetic entity, McJagger represents our school and our collective personality. Not only does he do this, but he also (as mentioned) is responsible for installing a sense of spirit and unity into the student body.
Despite mascots being the underdog in many high school flicks, in all reality they are the very binding force of a school community. No matter what the typical superlatives try to tell you, the mascot really can be the coolest kid in school. There is a certain bond shared with the audience, and the sports teams.
Another perk of being the mascot is the complete anonymity. “People won't know who you are unless you say anything, and you can make a fool of yourself and not care,” stated McJagger. Dancing, jumping, and having fun in front of a crowd is what it's all about. Being the mascot is a perfect opportunity to practice your pop and lock before trying it out on your hot prom date.
All in all, the mascot is the unsung hero of Century’s spirit. How ever sweaty, smelly, or tiring it can be, it can be the experience of a lifetime. “If I were to give advice to anyone who wanted to be mascot I would say ‘just go for it!’... Overall it's just amazing.”
